CGS AND CGS JANUARY-LONDON

$

Hi guys! Happy decision day! This time last year I had just gotten my decision and it was something I've never heard of, the January Boston-London program in CGS. I knew nothing about it at first but after doing some research it's where I ended up! I am now a freshman at BU and I will be leaving for London in 2 months. This thread is for anyone who was put into CGS or the London program and has questions about it! Congrats on your acceptance!

How competitive is FYSOP?

How competitive is FYSOP? For example I have ~100 hours logged at a local greyhound rescue shelter over the past 3 years and I frequently read about social justice issues online (feminist/gender theory in particular), would I have a fair chance of getting into FYSOP?

I got accepted for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB), but I'd now like to switch to Biomedical engineering. Can I just email someone and ask to switch? Or do I have to take a semester of classes first?

Is it Worth Going on Waitlist for BU?

So I just got my decision for BU today, and I got waitlisted. However, I'm not sure if it's worth going onto the waitlist for the Questrom School of Business. (Would have been fine going to CGS too, but I wasn't offered a spot there). Anyways, was wonder what are your guy's thoughts on that? In the letter, they made it specifically clear that the waitlist was apparently "short", however, I probably wouldn't get much financial aid out of it. Honestly, I'm kinda stuck between 2 roads. I really want to go to BU, but I have no idea what my financial aid would be. I did get accepted to other schools too (Bentley specifically) for business, but I still have my heart set on BU. Any one have any advice on what I should do now, should I keep this mindset towards BU or should I just cut my losses and move on to one of my actual acceptances?

Housing - tips on finding an apartment or room in BU

My daughter will be joining BU this fall as a grad student in BME. She is going to visit later this month to look for a place to live. I am told housing in the area is a serious challenge. Any tips on areas to focus on, neighborhoods to avoid, chances of finding on campus housing this late in the year will be deeply appreciated. Her budget is to stay under $1300 a month, preferably more like $1000 a month in rent. Safety and proximity are priorities as well. Any input on what her options are and resources for finding potential roommates would be super helpful! Thank you

Got a D in an online class- what's the damage??

Ok so first of all I know similar questions have been asked before but I'm freaking out her and need some direct reassurance. Ok so I was accepted into BU ED and kept my grades up the following 2 semesters (my school does 4 semesters per year). Overall I think I did rather decently and did not have too many issues with senioritis. Until this quarter I went on an exchange program for a few weeks in France and as a result my work for my online classes fell short, my AP psych class in particular. I ended up not taking the exam bc I felt completely unprwpared and overwhelmed bc I had missed so much school and decided to focus on my other APs (which I know makes everything look even worse) It's an online program that's self paced so I assumed I'd have more time to complete my work, but the class has closed and I don't think I have any way to bring up my grade. I know this is all my fault and I really messed up. I'm just wondering how badly I screwed myself? Will one D cause them to rescind my application even if I get high Bs and As for my other classes (which I know I will)? Or do you think I will just get put on academic probation or something? I only post in this specific thread bc I'm not sure what specific policies BU has in place. I know it's a case by case thing but I wonder if precedent will work in my favor or not.

Freshman Dorms at BU

I'll be studying in CAS as a freshman next year at Boston University and I need some help choosing dorms, West vs. Warren. I've gotten the basic ideas that Warren is good for convenience and West is good for pretty much everything else (correct me if I'm wrong) but what I haven't read about yet is if Warren holds most of the CAS students. As of now I'm leaning more towards West, but I want to make sure there will be a good amount of students in CAS in in West. Help please!

GPA vs. AP scores

Hi, I'm an international student and am willing to apply to Boston Univ this fall. My GPA is 3.9 (unweighted), my SAT reasoning test score is 2180, and I took SAT Subject Test Math Level 2 and World History and got over 750 on both. The thing is, I have taken 3 AP tests but I got good scores on only two subjects, which are World History and CalculusBC. When applying to Boston Univ, would my having taken only 3 and excelling on only 2 AP tests adversely affect my chance of getting into the school?

Boston University RISE 2016

Hey, I realized that there isn't any discussion about the applicants this year to BU RISE. Anybody else out there applying? I hope you all get your applications done soon, the deadline's getting close.... Anyway, does anybody have an estimate of how competitive it's going to be this year? I know that the number of applicants they get every year increases. If I had a B in math junior year, does that disqualify me??

Boston University vs Northeastern : Bio and Pre-Med

I know this is a topic as old as time but I feel like it needs repeating given my specific interests and these schools continuing advancements in their programs and ,for what its worth, their rankings. Some background: I am a transfer student that will be entering in the Fall of 2016 as a junior. I came from a large urban Catholic (Jesuit) school in the Midwest but I am from NH. I am, and will be, studying Biology as well as be on a Pre-Medical track. I have currently been accepted to UVM, BU, and NU. I have been denied from Tufts and BC and I am currently waiting on Cornell and Holy Cross. But this topic is about the big two I have gotten into so far, BU and NU! Both will be about the same in cost so that should be of little to no consideration. In terms of location it really is a tossup, Neither stand out to be as "better" than the other and neither do the campuses. They are both well place within the city and neither have a campus that "wows" me. As for academics, it honestly seems about the same to me with NU having less of a liberal arts curriculum (my previous school certainly had one). I'm a legacy at both (my father at NU and my grandfather at BU). I would say BU has more of the "intangibles" for me but not to the point I would pick one over the other. What I need the CC community for is to maybe give their inputs on the subject. Maybe why you chose one school over the other. Maybe comment on specifically the Biology programs and the opportunities both schools will have in respect to Pre-Medical (yes I know MCAT and GPA are the most important). BU-Med is a top choice for me for medical schools so I guess that is a factor as well. I really need some input as neither of the schools is a glaring top choice for me in regards to my specific interest,

Trustee Scholarship--Should I Take It?

I just found out that I received the Trustee Scholarship at BU and I'm trying to find out more about the program to determine if it beats out other full tuition scholarships (like Northeastern's University Scholars Program or Vanderbilt's Cornelius Vanderbilt scholarship). I'm particularly concerned about the GPA requirement, and the reputation BU has for deflating grades. I was accepted to the School of Music/College of Arts and Sciences dual degree program, and I'm worried about the stress level I would have. Just wondering if anybody has any insight into this situation. Any information about BU culture, the Trustee Scholarship, or the School of Music would be much appreciated. Thank you to all in advance!

Guide to Computer Science at BU

I'll be leaving BU but I had a great two years. This is a student's perspective on the CS program and department. A website can tell you about the curriculum and requirements, but I can tell you my experience. Feel free to ask me any questions and private message me. -Education First off, the only degree offered at BU is a Bachelor's in Arts in Computer Science. All majors in the College of Arts & Sciences are offered as BAs. Do BA or BS matter when getting a job? Not at all! They're just different based on general requirements but they typically take the same CS classes. Pretty much most CS programs and curriculums are similar because the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) has a standard for undergraduate CS programs and requirements. Professors at BU tell me that the program is considered more theoretical because the CS program grew out of the math department. Personally I'm a fan of theoretical CS but if you're interested in an applied education, you have the options of not taking as many theoretical classes. Your first CS class, if you don't have the AP credit, is Introduction to CS 1. The course is taught in python and is generally very easy. The following course is Data Structures, which is taught in Java. You'll learn how to build your own data structures and learn some basic sorting/searching algorithms. Afterwards, you'll take Computer Systems, where you learn about how data is represented in computers, assembly language, caches, etc. You'll also take an introductory discrete math class, a linear algebra class, and then options to take probability or applied abstract algebra. Algorithm analysis, considered the most difficult class in the curriculum, is required for all majors. There are also 300 level requirements and you get to choose 2 out of the three - programming languages, computing systems, or theory of computation. The rest are electives. Some people will double in math + cs, or cs + econ. Whatever floats your boat! Some of the professors are actually awful teachers. Before signing up, make sure to check your professor ratings. If a bad teacher is teaching a class, I'd say wait out a semester or two. The good professors at BU are Professor Sullivan, Professor Snyder, Professor Matta, Professor Appavoo, Professor Byers, and Professor Crovella. Avoid Professor Gacs, Professor Levin, and Professor Xie. Seriously. -Extracurriculars We have a small, tight knit community. I think we have around 300 CS majors, 30% female 70% male. There are a bunch of great student groups. CS student groups at BU: BUILDS - have a small hacking room in the Math & CS building, hold awesome workshops, also has a small ctf/security group. Global App Initiative - group of students who build apps for non-profits. Open Web - selective club of students dedicated to building quality software Women in CS - community for everyone with goals of encouraging and educating about women in cs. Also bring in a lot of top companies to campus. MakeBU - weekly hack nights BU HPC club - high performance computing club; they compete at a lotta competitions There's also a facebook group for CS majors. The people and professors are supportive. Professors are always open to having undergrads join their labs. Getting research is important, especially if you have grad school in mind. -Job Search, Career stuff There are a bunch of job fairs at BU. The fairs to look out for are the fairs for the College of Engineering students. CS isn't in College of Engineering, so you'll have to look up on ENG's website. They try to be exclusive about their fairs haha. Also look out for the startup job fair! That's a lotta fun. We've had Google, Yelp, and GE hold tech talks here. No one's going to hand you a job or internship, and you'll have to network and work hard for yourself. We honestly don't have strong tech connections, but with hard work you can be successful. I like the CS department here because of the people and the community. We're not a top CS school, but we have a supportive community. Everyone helps each other.

What are my Chances?

I am a Junior in highschool and a prospective student. I would like to know what you think my chances are for acceptance into the school I am in the top 10% of my class, and my GPA is a 3.92 My SAT Score is an 1860 (Lower than the Midrange) My EC activities hopefully make up for a bit of lacking test scores I have been president of Student Government each year I've been in high school and I was elected executive board president for next year I was elected FBLA President for next year I have been admitted into Peer Leadership for next year (a very difficult feat), I am a Varsity Tennis and Soccer Player and a candidate for Tennis Captain next year I have 800+ service hours and I have been a member of the Red Cross Youth Group since freshman year I have taken AP Calculus and APUSH, I expect to get atleast a 3 on the calculus exam and atleast a 4 on the APUSH, if not a 5 I am also a member of an International Business Alliance Program through Leadership Initiatives in Washington D.C. where I am partnered with a Nigerian Business. Our Group comes up with business plans and solutions to help our partner's business grow. I am also the fundraising coordinator of the club and I am required to create fundraising solutions to earn 5000 each year which I have been successful with. With all of this information, do you think my chances are significant enough to consider Boston University a reach school, or are my chances simply too minuscule with my lacking test scores?

Planning Class Registration before orientation

So I know we (incoming freshmen) can't officially register for courses until orientation when we meet our advisor but I noticed that there's a class planner on the student link where we can select courses we'd like to take before we officially register. Would anyone recommend that I do this? Just bc I'd like to be prepared and have some idea as to what courses I'd like to take before I go to orientation (I know there's no guarantee that I'll get into the classes I want but still). I also already know that I want to do divisional studies instead of core so that's not an issue. If it is recommended, I'm still not sure how to go about researching and choosing classes? Like is there any way to see what course requirements there are for freshmen, like a course catalog or something online? I mean one that's specifically for freshmen with course options meant for the requirements specific to us? The only ones I've seen are for requirements for specific majors, most of which I think are meant for upper classmen/don't list requirements outside your major.

Trustee Scholarship admission rates, # of applicants

Does anyone know how many of 52,000+ students that apply to BU also apply for the Trustee Scholarship? Also, I see that the BU site says "every year, Boston University welcomes about 20 outstanding students to the Trustee Scholars Program" but does anyone know how many students are offered the Trustee Scholarship (in order to yield ~ 20 students per year)? Thanks!

How competitive are intramurals/club sports?

I would love to play an intramural or club sport (I'm mainly thinking softball or hockey), but I've never really played sports before. If I were to play it'd mostly be to have fun, meet people, and stay in shape. I wouldn't want to join a team and then find out that they're intensely competitive and make a fool of myself, lol. If anyone has any info on how competitive they are, I would greatly appreciate it!
